OUR HISTORY

The Immaculata Symphony is an outstanding musical organization with a long and rich history. From the earliest days of the college's founding in 1920, the department of music has included among its performing groups an orchestra which, over the years, has grown steadily from a fledgling group of chamber size to the large and highly respected symphonic ensemble it is today.

Originally and until the mid 70's, the orchestra was comprised solely of Immaculata students. One of the renowned conductors of that time was Frank Costanza, an accomplished violinist and member of the Philadelphia Orchestra. Subsequently, the orchestra was opened for participation to members of the community.

This new era began under the direction of Dr. Constantine Johns, violinist and former professor at West Chester University. Since 1985, the orchestra has been under the baton of Roman Pawlowski, charismatic leader and highly respected musician. In response to his guidance, the Symphony has successfully met every challenge of artistic accomplishment and excellence and continues to hold great promise for future growth and positive impact on the cultural life of the college and local community.

Continuing as an integral part of the department of music in fulfillment of its academic requirements, the Symphony is also supported by the efforts of a newly-formed Board of Directors. This Board is comprised of faculty members, student and community orchestra members, and non-performing community members. Its purpose is to help achieve the musical goals, prosperity and growth of the orchestra through fund-raising and provision of human resources.
