SUMMARY:Spring Concert
DESCRIPTION:Spring Concert – “New Directions”\nSaturday\, April 15\, 2023\nAlumnae Hall\n7:30PM\n\nGeneral Admission: $15\nSenior: $12\nChildren and students FREE \n\nJoseph Gehring\, music director\n \n\nRichard Danielpour – Anima Mundi\nSergei Rachmaninoff – Symphony No. 2 in E minor\, Op. 27\n \n\nWhile being a virtuoso pianist and celebrated conductor\, Rachmaninoff considered himself first and foremost a composer. After several disastrous premiers and harsh criticism of earlier works\, the triumph of his Second Symphony restored Rachmaninoff’s sense of self-worth as a symphonist and it remains one of his most popular and best-known compositions. This monumental work is paired with Richard Danielpour’s exuberant Anima Mundi. Danielpour\, who is Professor of Music at the Herb Alpert School of Music at UCLA as well as a member of the faculty of the Curtis Institute of Music\, uses the title to suggest an intrinsic connection between all living beings. And although composed for ballet\, the work highlights every section of the orchestra incorporating exciting rhythmic ideas unlike anything you have heard from the Immaculata Symphony before.

The work’s lyrical fourth movement features ImS Concertmaster Jacqueline Vilbert. We then welcome back to the stage Ovidiu Marinecu performing with ImS principal cellist Amy Flynn in his new Concerto for Two Cellos\, inspired by Romanian\, Bulgarian\, Scandinavian\, and Irish folk music and dance tunes. The concert opens with Malcom Arnold’s Peterloo Overture\, which depicts the Peterloo Massacre of 1819. This powerful work ends in triumph\, “in the firm belief that all those who have suffered and died in the cause of unity amongst mankind\, will not have died so in vain.”
