Richard Danielpour – Anima Mundi
Sergei Rachmaninoff – Symphony No. 2 in E minor, Op. 27
While being a virtuoso pianist and celebrated conductor, Rachmaninoff considered himself first and foremost a composer. After several disastrous premiers and harsh criticism of earlier works, the triumph of his Second Symphony restored Rachmaninoff’s sense of self-worth as a symphonist and it remains one of his most popular and best-known compositions. This monumental work is paired with Richard Danielpour’s exuberant Anima Mundi. Danielpour, who is Professor of Music at the Herb Alpert School of Music at UCLA as well as a member of the faculty of the Curtis Institute of Music, uses the title to suggest an intrinsic connection between all living beings. And although composed for ballet, the work highlights every section of the orchestra incorporating exciting rhythmic ideas unlike anything you have heard from the Immaculata Symphony before.
